PROMOTING 'GUARDIANSHIP' AND NOT OWNERSHIP OF THESE LOVING COMPANIONS.
We hope you can take a few moments to view each of our lovely, healthy felines here waiting to love you!
Our "Safe Haven" is currently at FULL CAPACITY. We know there are many more out there that need to be rescued, however, we can only do this when there is an adoption.
THIS IS A 'LET LIVE' SAFE HAVEN that, for over 15 years, has rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed abandoned, injured, or "to be destroyed" felines and some canine friends along the way. Each kitty is given individual time and attention (both health and behaviour) to ensure he reaches his best potential, thus giving us the opportunity to best match him with the perfect lifetime guardian.
EACH KITTY HAS A SPECIAL STORY. BELOW PLEASE SEE OUR 'FEATURED FELINES' WHO URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP! PLEASE ALSO SCROLL TO 'OUR LATEST RESCUES' FOR A GLIMPSE AT SOME OF OUR SPECIAL KITTIES.
DONATIONS:
We have no choice but to DEPEND ON THE KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY OF PUBLIC DONATIONS AS WE ARE NOT FUNDED AT ALL.
Most needed, and appreciated, are BASIC FOOD, LITTER & VETERINARY COSTS (please see DETAILS below).
SPONSORING just one kitty with his special needs/diet will help us tremendously.
EMERGENCY FUNDRAISING:
SHELTER IN DIRE NEED OF REPAIRS & A TIN ROOF:
The roof and 2 windows MUST BE REPLACED BEFORE WINTER - OUR TARGET: $3500.00 ( Raised to date - 1/4 of the metal roofing).
(Thanks to Frank who will donate some labour costs!)
OUTDOOR CAT ENCLOSURE:
As the shelter has been a bit overcrowded for the past year (DO WE LEAVE THEM OUT IN THE COLD OR BRING THEM IN?), we would like to give relief to the cats, and especially to some of our long-time residents by letting them out in a secure outdoor CAT ENCLOSURE.
OUR TARGET: $1500.00 (Raised to date - $100.00)
YOU MAY OBTAIN REFERENCES FROM OUR VET OR SOME OF OUR ADOPTERS BY CONTACTING US FOR DETAILS.
PLEASE CONTACT US FIRST TO GET DETAILS, IF YOU REQUIRE A TAX RECEIPT.

FEATURED FELINE: VICTOR
WE NEED A HELPING HAND WITH VET CARE COSTS FOR VICTOR
Victor is barely a year old and we rescued him at age 2 and a half months. He was a healthy cat until this past February when he began losing weight mysteriously. We are not sure what occurred at that time, as he was not in our care. He had to return to our shelter for immediate medical intervention. Victor has now been hospitalized 3 times and seen two veterinarians and is still holding on, however the diagnosis is not clear to date. He is getting the best care by the shelter owner around the clock. Our veterinary bills so far total $650.00 but we will continue to hope for his recovery.
If you would like to help us with Victor's care, our shelter and Victor will be more than grateful. Donations towards his medical expenses can be sent directly to our veterinarian. Please call our shelter to get our vet's phone # and address. Thank you.
WE DON'T GIVE UP ON ANY OF OUR KITTIES UNTIL WE ARE CERTAIN THERE IS NO HOPE, OR WHEN THEY TELL US THEY ARE SUFFERING!
FEATURED FELINE: TI'LOUP
THIS BOY WAS WORTH EVERY DOLLAR OF THE $900 IT TOOK TO SAVE HIM!
He's now back home as of July 19th. Ti'Loup has been hospitalized 3 times and his recovery is no less than a miracle! His urinary blockage was so severe he had to catheterized twice, but went through all this like a trooper. We're so glad he's doing well now, not to mention how happy he is to be home! He is quite a character and we just can't imagine not having him around just because we couldn't afford to try to save him!
We are now praying for some kind angels out there to help us with this cost, for which we have absolutely no reserves. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP US OR SPONSOR TI'LOUP FOR HIS SPECIAL DIET, PLEASE CALL US AND WE WILL BE GLAD TO GIVE YOU OUR VET'S PHONE AND ADDRESS WHERE YOU CAN FORWARD YOUR DONATIONS DIRECTLY! THANK YOU!
THERE IS NO GREATER REWARD THAN TO RECEIVE THE LOVE AND TRUST OF A ONCE TERRORIZED AND HELPLESS ANIMAL RESCUED FROM DEATH'S DOOR

PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO READ OUR ADOPTION PROCEDURE BELOW. THANK YOU!
It's worth an hour's drive to receive a lifetime of unconditional love! Located just 1 hour East of Ottawa or 45 minutes West of Montreal, off Highway 417.
We invite you to call

BONUS: All of our adopters receive a Health & Behaviour Guide, which we have written from years of research and hands-on care; from "Preparing your New Kitty to Arrive" to "Signs & Symptoms of various Health-Related Illnesses". Of course, we also offer our assistance at anytime, by phone, to our adopters.
A DISCOUNT SPAY/NEUTER SERVICE has been offered to the public, and run by the owner for the past 10 years, to educate and help reduce over-population in this rural community. It has shown significant improvement - but volunteers are needed in this area now to continue!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A FEW OF THE LATEST RESCUE SURVIVAL STORIES:
HURRICANE - How could he have survived (and barely did) for the first 6 months of his life during the winter months from November to April 2006...BLIND! Found during torrential rains in the middle of the road; read how he was rescued, escaped & RESCUED AGAIN!
YANNA - You couldn't find a more gentle soul. This kitty was barely 8 months when she was found, very pregnant and begging for food at someone's door. When we rescued her she had to have an emergency abortion due to uterine infection that would have killed her within the week, not to mention the pain she was in. She is so playful and a joy.
HOPI - Hopi was so traumatized when first rescued that when a cat is behind him he will still sometimes try to bite his own tail. This fellow is just so loving that the streets were too much for him. Almost all his fur fell out due to malnourishment, his ears were badly infected and he has had surgery for one eye due to scarring and may need one more procedure. Look at him now!
MYLA - This sweet girl was barely one year when she was brought in to our vet's with 5 kittens to be euthanized. Not only did she dutifully nurture her kittens until they were found good homes, but the vet then gave her 4 more from a mom who died in labour and she again did her job! She adores people.
MINIE - Her picture doesn't do her justice; with such a pretty, tiny face and pintsize for an adult. Minie's demeanour will pull at your heart strings as she rolls up her backside and meows for more petting...and we thought she was going to be hard to tame! She was brought to us in a live trap in the trunk of an old farmer's car. He had contacted us to spay one cat and said the mother, Minie, would be euthanized as she was old: 2 or 3 years, he said!! We think she has at least 15 more years left in her. On arrival she escaped from the farmer's attempt to open the trap, reappeared in the dark 3 weeks later. We thought it was quite ingenious of her to find her way back to a place she'd never known. READ ON HOW WE FINALLY GOT HER BACK AND JUST IN TIME....
AND THERE ARE MANY MORE STORIES WITH EACH KITTY WE HAVE SAVED!

HISTORY
Since our beginning in 1993, some 1000 Cats, and some dogs, have been rescued and found homes. Every cat is given every chance and the required medical intervention before the decision is made, with our vet's recommendation, to euthanize when suffering cannot be controlled and the quality of life is irreversible.
SERVING THE COMMUNITY...
Jazzy-Jo Havenly Felines is operated by one person and we often liaise with another "No-Kill" rescue organization in Ottawa. We are one of 2 small rescues that serve the communities' needs in a very large county. We are expected to take in all the strays and unwanted pets and it has been a struggle to survive without volunteers or support. We are not funded nor sponsored and rely solely on the good will and generosity of the public. It has been only by the continuous support of a few adopters and loyal supporters that we have been able to survive. We thank them so much and to those who have come to the rescue of some of our special kitties who required costly treatments. Many kitties remain here for years as we are 'No-Kill" and we hope we can continue to care for all of their basic needs.
For the past 10 years we have been running a DISCOUNT SPAY/NEUTER service for the public (driving people's cats to my vet 1 hour away and back, once per month), to help with the massive over-population problem as well as educating on the seriousness of responsible pet ownership.
POSITIVE RESULT OF THIS SERVICE... approximately 750 cats (owned) have been neutered & spayed. 400 of these were female and, based on the statistics below (See section "Did You Know" below), if each had 2 litters per year, they would equal 1,760,000 (One Million Seven Hundred and Sixty Thousand) cats that would have survived and reproduced...soon dying from cold, disease and starvation. Each succeeding generation would again have reproduced, and this is a moderate estimate! Nor does this number include the 350 males that would have done their share, adding to the numbers again. Then, add to this number, as well, the 1000 cats we rescued & neutered!
EUTHANASIA is an outdated method that has proven to be a false solution. Each year in Canada alone, there are a few hundred thousand cats either euthanized or dying on the streets, abandoned, suffering and starving. How could anyone possibly believe that it is right to "NOT STERILIZE"? This means there is ONLY ONE SOLUTION: MANDATORY, BY LAW, SPAY & NEUTERING OF ALL PETS ADOPTED AND LICENSING TO BREED!
WHAT WILL THIS COMMUNITY DO WHEN WE CLOSE?
We do not receive subsidies of any kind, nor are we supported in any manner by the community, therefore we rely solely on private donations.
OUR MANDATE
To continue to insure that each animal rescued receives the best possible care we can afford, and often cannot afford; to insure each animal is placed in a safe, loving home for life that is conducive to his/her personality; to continue to educate the public regarding proper pet care, responsibilities of pet guardianship and assistance to our adopters as required; and, lastly, to insure that the animals we rescue should NEVER HAVE TO BE RESCUED AGAIN!
Beyond Rescuing, Rehabilitation & Rehoming...
The care our resident cats have received include many various medical treatments.
Spaying & neutering of all rescues;
On-going up-to-date vaccinations;
and, as necessary
teeth cleaning & extractions;
hospitalizations;
X-Rays;
blood work;
parasite treatments;
urinary tract & kidney problems;
upper respiratory;
skin allergy treatments;
ear surgery and ear infection treatments;
eye infection treatments & surgery;
emergency care;
and more.

ADOPTION PROCEDURE AND CRITERIA
:
1. Criteria for Adoption:
Among our Criteria for accepting you as a potential adoptor, are:
You must be 18 years of age or over
You must be gainfully employed
You must provide 2 references
Cats must be INDOOR ONLY OR PROPERLY TETHERED OR 'CAT-FENCED'
Cats MUST NEVER BE DECLAWED
Your present cats must be altered and vaccinated
You must agree to an adoption follow-up visit
2. Adoption Procedure:
We would like to talk with you by phone to discuss our adoption criteria and basically to determine whether we may have a suitable companion for you
We will then send you our Adoption Questionnaire, which will be reviewed, and, if all is in order for a visit, an appointment is made for you and your family.
You will be able to take your time meeting all of our resident kitties and play with them and see if you make that 'special connection'. During your visit we will provide you with information on the cats that might be the best candidates and that interest you; we will also give you our Adoption Contract to review at home.
We then ask that you reflect on your decision carefully and call us if you have any further questions; we may also call you to inform you whether we believe that there is a good potential for an adoption.
Because the transition to a new home/territory for a cat is quite stressful, we will be bringing your new companion to your home. Additionally, to help prepare you for the new arrival, we will forward our ADOPTION GUIDELINES OF HEALTH & BEHAVIOUR which will be helpful in caring for your companion for it's lifetime; advice is provided to our adopters free for the lifetime of the cat.
Our requested basic Adoption Fee is $175.00 ($200 for kittens), with a small donation for delivery, and this may sometimes fluctuate depending on the medical care that this particular cat has needed; all adoption fee donations and other donations are to cover our vet costs & treatments, feeding, housing, and all other aspects of providing care for our cats; we will complete the Adoption Contract on delivery.
3. Our Guarantee:
When the cat is brought to your home we are guaranteeing that it is in good health and we will provide you with its history of health and behaviour, (in writing and verbally), since it has entered our shelter. Due to our budget we are unable to test each cat for FELV/FIV however, the longer the cats are with us showing no signs of repeated illness, this is a very good indication and suggests that the cat does not have any immune-deficiency diseases.
We offer a Lifetime Return Policy and any cat adopted who cannot be kept MUST be returned to us. Because we go the extra mile to insure you will have a healthy and well-adjusted cat we ask only that you will keep him safe and well cared for it's lifetime and respect our adoption terms and policies of adoption.
DID YOU KNOW?
1 lone female cat will produce 11,801 cats surviving in only 5 years
HOW CAN YOU HELP? PASS THE WORD SPAY/NEUTER IS THE ONLY SOLUTION. YOU CAN CHOOSE TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION OR A PART OF THE PROBLEM OF OVERPOPULATION AND SENSELESS SUFFERING.
FACT: IT IS A PROVEN FACT THAT THERE IS A DEFINITE LINK BETWEEN ANIMAL CRUELTY AND HUMAN VIOLENCE -STRAY AND ABANDONED ANIMALS ARE THE FIRST VICTIMS OF HUMAN CRUELTY!
POPULAR MYTHS & MISCONCEPTIONS:
- Long hair cats shed
: No, short hair cats can shed MORE than long hair - some long hair cats don't shed at all
- Adopting adults cats vs adopting kittens
: It is totally untrue that an adult cat will not learn your habits; because of his maturity (1 year plus), the adult cat understands your rules faster and can adapt within 3 to 6 weeks, as opposed to a kitten that you must train on a daily basis for 5 or 6 months.
- Kittens are best with small children
: No, on the contrary, small children (under age 6) MUST be supervised with ANY animal. IT IS AN ANIMAL, NOT A TOY! Adult cats can more easily leave the grip of a small child who has not yet developed the motor skills to properly hold it; whereas many kittens who are unable to escape may soon become aggressive, fearful or even biters as they mature. Shelters often get these 5-6 month old kittens that we try to
rehabilitate and win back their trust. We adults all too often
forget that a young child NATURALLY also follows its survival
instincts and learns the cat's habits by body language. Again, with
proper supervision and by watching how the parent handles the pet,
children will benefit from this special bond that will enrich their
entire lives.
.
- DECLAWING CATS WILL PROTECT YOUNG CHILDREN AND FURNITURE
- 1. It is a fact that a large majority of declawed cats more often bite as they have no other way of defending themselves. We can only emphasize to parents that young children (especially under age 6) MUST be supervised with any animal.
- 2. Cats MUST LEAVE THEIR SCENT ON THEIR PARTICULAR TERRITORY. This is their natural instinct. They must open their claws to release their own scent from the pads on their feet. At the same time nature provides the TREE AS A NATURAL FILING TOOL for the cat's claws. If cats were given what they naturally need, i.e. wooden or jute cord minimum 3 foot high scratching posts, there is no need to declaw. INSTEAD OF HANDICAPPING THE CAT TO ACCOMODATE YOUR HOME, PLEASE BRING THE OUTDOORS INTO YOUR HOME TO ACCOMODATE YOUR COMPLETELY PERFECT FELINE. (We have adopted out clawed cats into homes that are pristinely decorated - with great success).
- REMEMBER: You must take the time (3 to 6 weeks) to properly introduce and train your new cat to his new environment, and supply the necessary equipment.
- NOTE: WE CAN CONCLUDE, FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, THAT FROM THOSE CATS WE HAVE RESCUED 'TO BE EUTHANIZED', ONLY 2% OF THE CLAWED CATS HAD BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS; HOWEVER, 85% OF THE DECLAWED CATS HAD PROBLEMS SUCH AS IMPROPER ELIMINATION. WE BELIEVE THIS IS DUE TO HOW DECLAWED CATS PERCEIVE STRESS/CHANGE. (We will be glad to explain these issues ).
- There are many more myths - too many to respond to here (i.e. nutrition & cat diseases).
IN REMEMBRANCE
It is a lighter load that we carry each long day (sometimes without immediate solutions) by remembering the reasons why. These loving cat angels who have passed on have made a significant impact and touched the lives of many in a most positive way.
- Jazz -
Our name comes from this incredible cat with the emerald eyes and joyful disposition (no other cat could have been more loyal and smart to me). If it had not been for his early passing at 6 years of age, Jazzy-Jo Havenly Felines might not have come to be as he filled every inch of my life. Now he has made room for all the rest.
- Peach -
the first rescued stray (diabetes)
- Ching-Ching - Jo's 2nd cat, Jazzy's best friend, at 17, in 2002 (liver cancer)
- Teddy Bear - at 6 years (heart failure)
- Gris-Gris - 9 or 10? An angel on earth - (Jaw cancer)
- Precious Desiree - 2 or 3? To have met her was to love her; kisses for everyone (a perfect kitty with an untimely passing)
